In 1972,
When Singapore was still very young, Chan Chee Kwan 陈志坤 created a rare
opportunity for a 6-man team to venture into an once-in-a-lifetime experience.
They spent their leisure time improvising a raft with six huge empty oil drums
complete with a sail and life-saving buoyancies. It was good enough for them brave
the unpredictable weather and the unknown sea to sail round the main Singapore island.
The event was recorded as the first of its kind in Singapore. It took them six
days to complete the Round Singapore Rafting Expedition. The names of the six
adventurers were also featured in the newspapers at that time. Victory
was only possible with unfailing courage, untiring effort and undying
enthusiasm to face challenges ahead.
